Music For All Seasons

Music For All Seasons

Where the best winter music celebrates solitude, summer selections should be generously inclusive: Like nachos, cold beer, and venereal disease, this music is meant for sharing. Whether you’re at the beach, by the poolside, or in a dense South American jungle plotting the overthrow of a government with a group of like-minded revolutionaries, what’s playing in the background should unite everybody, just like a sunset. This summer mix is the first installment of a series of mixes done for AudioStream magazine.

The transition from summer to fall can be a disheartening one. It seems to happen slowly and instantly all at once. Just as our clothing moves from t-shirts to sweaters, and our food from barbecues to simmering pots, our music tastes are inclined to follow suit. The more inclusive and lighthearted fare that played well at beach parties and poolsides now seem conspicuously out of place. The sound of autumn is more introspective, with sounds that play like musical earth tones and feel less like cotton and more like wool. The transition from summer may be disheartening, but it can feel great once you arrive and allow yourself to embrace the fall.

While in summer months my music selections beg for everyone to come to the party, the winter finds me celebrating isolation. My most experimental of the seasonal series, this winter selection features minimalist electronic music picked for pristine production to reflect the crispness of the weather outside, while favouring a low-frequency warmth intended to heat whatever room you’re in like a smouldering fireplace. This delicate and patient cold weather soundscape is ideal for nights spent indoors, aware that being alone isn’t the same as being lonely.

Where my Winter Mix was an obscure selection intended to be enjoyed in isolation while shrouded in headphones and framed by frosted windows, the spring season finds me emerging from my musical shell with a more social selection – fresh like newly grown flowers or a pair of recently purchased sneakers. If my last mix was dark and foreboding, this one is playful and romantic, reflecting the fact that in springtime lust and love feel like the same thing.
