The Electric Adolescence Hip Hop Hall of Fame

Arguing that that hip hop hit it’s peak in the old school is like claiming that the original Star Wars films are better than the prequels in that only children disagree. My shield against sounding like an old man talking about the “good old days” when payphones cost a dime, and when it was easier to get a woman to make you a pot-roast than give you blowjob, is the fact that music has run this cycle often enough to have substantiated the fact that a genre is always more exiting when it’s attempting to find itself, and always more predictable once it has. Add to that the intangible bond a listener forges with a genre by being around during the days of it’s inception, one which becomes all but unexplainable to those who weren’t.

Back when the hip-hop was an open source phenomenon, a generation of producers and emcees raced to define it, having no road-map to mainstream success, and an industry still skeptical of what they dismissed as a fad. Eventually this acceptance came, as did the cash, and hip-hop found itself aligned with the pop-charts in a way its pioneers would have considered unthinkable. The following is a selection of cuts from back in the day when rap was like freshly poured concrete waiting for a new generation of street kids to leave a mark that would last forever.
